Former Star's D-Man Moves to USHL

YOUNGSTOWN, OH - The Youngstown Phantoms have acquired defenseman Carter Ekberg from the Janesville Jets (NAHL) in exchange for defenseman Sean Petrie. The deal was completed Saturday, Feb. 6, before the USA Hockey trade deadline for all American-based Junior leagues.

Ekberg, a McMurray, PA native, is a 1997 born right-shot defenseman. He played last season for the Esmark Stars U18 AAA team in the NAPHL and is currently uncommitted to a college hockey program. He started this season with the Des Moines Buccaneers and joined Janesville in late October.

“Carter is a regional kid coming from Pittsburgh, he is someone our staff has seen and knows well. Unfortunately we didn’t have the chance to draft him last year, but an opportunity presented itself to bring him in and hopefully develop him for the future,” Youngstown General Manager Jason Koehler said.

Ekberg skated two seasons with Esmark, 2013-14 with the 16U Stars and 2014-15 with the 18U Stars.  He was selected by the Johnstown Tomahawks during the 2014 NAHL season and then tendered by the Janesville Jets after the 2015 season. The Des Moines Buccaneers selected Ekberg during the third round (38rd overall) of the annual USHL Draft, that was held in May 2015.
